“You build culture hire by hire.”

Leaders often ask how to improve customer service. Some want to fix their culture and upgrade training. Those goals are certainly worthwhile, but they often miss the starting point; hiring the right people. That starts by making a change to your hiring practices.
If you do not change how you hire, the same problems will continue to appear. Training will not work if people are not motivated to learn. Culture initiatives will stall if employees do not care about the values behind them. Skill matters, but skill alone does not solve problems. People must also be motivated to use those skills.
That is why hiring matters so much. The goal is to identify people who want to do the work who care about the mission and who will engage with the expectations you set. Culture changes will occur gradually, shifting hire by hire.
Every time you bring in someone who cares about the work the culture moves in the right direction. Over time those hires reinforce the standards you want to see. Think of it like building a team. If the right players are not on the field the strategy will never succeed.
The same principle applies in business. Everything begins with who walks through the door.
