“As you build out your network, it’s important to have authenticity. Don’t just talk to somebody because you want something out of it.”
A lot of people talk about chasing their dream job, but don’t always put in the work to land it. Twenty-three years ago, I made my dream come true as a Cast Member at Walt Disney World. That experience shaped the way I view people leadership and HR recruiting. Which is what makes my conversation with Rob Midiri even more special. We met up at Epcot in Walt Disney World, to talk about the sometimes grueling, yet rewarding journey toward landing that ideal role.
Doing it the right way means being intentional about how you create those winning cultures.
Rob’s determination and relentless spirit taught me more than I thought I knew about pursuing a dream job. Mainly that it’s a passion-driven endeavor. Right from the start, Rob didn’t sugarcoat it. Chasing your dream job can be incredibly discouraging. He submitted 70 applications before even securing an interview. But his experience also exemplifies why persistence is key. With every application he was refining his approach, leveraging networks, and keeping a pulse on his passion.
Rob shared the importance of what he called a ‘personal board of directors.’ This is a group of trusted advisors who provide candid feedback to ensure you remain grounded and aligned with your goals. For Rob, this circle of support was indispensable in navigating the emotional highs and lows of his job search.
Remember, if you don’t think you are enough without the dream job, you’ll never be enough with it. Have genuine passion and know your purpose before even stepping foot in the door. Our conversation felt like a roadmap that can inspire or even challenge your approach to landing your dream job. The journey itself is as transformative as the destination.
