Navigating Leading and Following in Leadership

Nov 12, 2024 | Podcast

World at Work Podcast episode 95 navigating leading and following

“The same time that you’re the captain of the ship, you also have to be a good Lieutenant. And that is listening to the command of others that may or may not be on the ship.”

Leadership journeys are a mix of leading and following. It is incredibly important to be adaptable. Donald Forgione pushed pause on his podcast, Tailgate Talks, to join for a conversation about the true essence of leadership. Early in my leadership career, I thought it was all about being the one to direct and make every decision. As Donald highlights, effective leadership often means knowing when to let others lead.

Donald has dedicated over four decades to working in various roles in the parks and recreation industry. He worked as an interpretive ranger at a historic site, where he engaged visitors with compelling stories and factual information. He later transitioned to the role of a law enforcement ranger, taking on the responsibilities of a state law enforcement officer. Donald’s journey and stories help highlight the importance of the versatility in leadership.

Imagine you’re a wildland firefighter. The fire doesn’t care about your title. If someone on the front lines radios in a wind change, you trust them. Their knowledge is crucial for everyone’s safety. This lesson is true in any business setting. Leaders need to know when to step back and let their team members’ expertise shine.

Donald emphasizes the importance of two-way accountability. As leaders, be open to following. It’s not about letting go of your role; it’s about empowering others and fostering trust. Leading isn’t always about being the “alpha.” Sometimes the best move you can make is letting others take the reins and showing them you’ve got their back.

Figuring out how to navigate the delicate balance of leading and following takes time. The payoff is well worth it though. Leadership isn’t a solo act. it’s a team effort. And your teams will notice yours.

Big shoutout to Donald Forgione for sharing his lessons and stories. Make sure to check out this podcast, Tailgate Talks. Let’s continue to grow, learn, and lead together!
